The child that has a conduct disorder like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is gifted. This special child is creative and spontaneous with the ability to hyper focus on any interesting task.
Conversely, this same child is a challenge to parents because they can often be aggressive, hyper, distractible and impulsive. The world views these children as "hard to handle" which can permanently harm self-esteem. Some educators might insist on using an adhd drug treatment.

Notwithstanding, ADHD is not just a shortness of capacity to remain attentive, but also the skill to focus intently on the subject matter of choice. Kids with ADHD don't actually lack focus but have the tendency to focus unsuitably and are quick to become bored with a task. A sport can be either a positive or nonconstructive experience for all children, but for the child with a conduct disorder even more so. Spending excess energy is always good for the ADHD child; however, playing on a team can be difficult for her if she can't learn the rules of play or fulfill the role the team needs. |
From Conduct Disorder to Kids Taekwondo
Martial arts can be therapeutic to the child with a conduct disorder
- Tae kwon do provides a safe, controlled environment where aggressive behavior is permitted.
- The Master gives instructions that are quickly acted on.
- This provides a relevance to the actions and immediate gratification.
- Tae kwon do stresses self-confidence and control which, when mastered, raises self-esteem for any student.
- Martial arts training could usurp adhd medicine in the right child.
Part of tae kwon do instruction is the philosophy of "right action" which is to reach a point where you inherently know how to react in a situation with no thought.
This teaching helps the impulsive ADHD child curb those impulses.
Classes are exciting with lots of jumping, kicking, spinning and punching so boredom is never an issue. Hyperactivity doesn't exist in a tae kwon do class. Action is rewarded.
An important quality of tae kwon do instruction is respect and acceptance of all people despite the labels society has placed on them.

Boys and Girls are Affected by Attention Deficit
Many people assume ADHD is primarily a boy problem but this is not true. ADD which is the same disorder without the hyperactivity component, is diagnosed in girls in equal numbers to boys with ADHD. Both disorders are genetic; studies show 25% of children diagnosed have a parent with Attention Deficit.
You can't outgrow Attention Deficit, so it becomes crucial to find ways to lessen the burdens of the disadvantages. Help your child learn to see the constructive aspects of their character and turn those traits into successes.
The child with conduct disorder bears the same positive characteristics that are cultivated by the successful in society. Artists, entrepreneurs, politicians and athletes are a few of the successful people whom history has described with classic ADHD traits. Some of the most creative, intense, spontaneous, tenacious and quick thinking people in history have probably had ADHD; Thomas Edison, Mozart and Winston Churchill to name but a few.
That's not bad company at all.

Tae kwon do - a family activity
ADD in Adults
ADD children turn into ADD adults.
Martial arts training holds the same great benefits for adults as for kids.
Consider joining your child in tae kwon do lessons. It will create a bond that will benefit parent and child.
One of the best ways to keep your child interested in an activity is to share that activity with them.
Many schools have discount membership rates for families and family classes so that everyone can train at the same time saving trips back and forth to the dojang.
