The modern history of tae kwon do styles began in the mid 1940's after World War II. Japanese occupation had ended and Korean martial artists were once again able to practice their arts in the open. Two main orginizations came to life, WTF or World Tae kwon do Federation and ITF or International Tae kwon do Federation.

ITF Tae Kwon Do
These two branches of the original modern tae kwon do are both political in nature. Where there are politics, there are disagreements.

International Tae Kwon Do Association
American organizations began in the late 1960's early 70's as an alternative to the Korean based organizations.
While the International Tae kwon do Association is the non-political alternative started by an American Master of the Korean arts.

Kukkiwon represents the research and learning center for taekwondo.
